Client  Studio Roosegaarde, Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment

Location  Afsluitdijk (NL)

Status  Realised 2017

One of the projects I worked on at Studio Roosegaarde was 'Icoon Afsluitdijk'. The Afsluitdijk, a 32-kilometre dam connecting Friesland and North Holland, is a crucial part of the Dutch Zuiderzee Works water defense system. Completed in 1932, it was due for large-scale renovation and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment commissioned Studio Roosegaarde to add a new layer of light and interaction to this historic infrastructure.

Gates of Light is an interactive, zero-energy light installation on the 60 historic floodgates. The architectural contours are highlighted by retroreflective strips, responding to the headlights of passing vehicles. Without cars, the floodgates remain dark, preserving the darkness of one of the Netherlands' least light-polluted areas.

Other Studio Roosegaarde projects I contributed to include the Smog Free Tower and Smog Free Ring, Beyond at Schiphol Airport, and Space at Eindhoven Central Station.

This project was awarded the Global Future Design Awards 2020, the International Architecture Transportation Awards 2019, the Lighting Design Award, and the A'Design Awards Platinum 2018.
