Growth, what is that?

Type  Exhibition design | Supervision

Collaboration Kossmanndejong, part of Creative Industries Fund NL's 'Building Talent'

Location  Malmö Museer, Malmö (SE)

Status  Realised 2022

This exhibition explores the concept of growth, questioning its societal, ecological, and individual implications. Seven spatial installations built from borrowed rebar create an immersive space. These installations form a labyrinthine structure that lets visitors engage with fundamental questions about growth through objects, sound, and light.

Each installation examines a different aspect of growth. For example, one appears as a massive lucky cat, seemingly waving its paw, but as you come closer, it turns out to an assemblage of hundreds of smaller cats, each beckoning for more fortune. This installation raises the question: when is enough enough? Visitors can further dive into the topic by calling the phone numbers to hear locals share their personal reflections on growth.

The spatial design is accompanied by an evolving soundscape composed of seven separate compositions. Each installation has its own sounds, yet every ten minutes, they synchronize through a musical cue that that all pieces are linked.

Questioning the growing consumption, the materials used in the exhibition are mostly borrowed from local companies. This required a specific design and detailing approach, as the materials could not be cut and only connected in a demountable way. After the exhibition, the materials were returned, demonstrating how much already exists that we can use without the need to produce anything new at a financial and ecological cost.

This project was awarded the International Design Awards in 2023 in the category Cultural Interior Design and Installation.
